Abstract:
Virginia’s DMME Division of Mined Reclamation (DMLR) Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) approach has successfully incorporated watershed restoration with permitting processes. DMLR’s TMDL approach is helping achieve goals of stream restoration. Implementation of TMDLs into DMLR’s permits has been coordinated with agency’s AML program. Many AML projects completed during the past ten years have targeted impaired watersheds. Combinations of offsets and AML projects have restored nearly a hundred miles of coalfield streams.
